In Lee County, school begins August 8th. People moving from Northern states often assume that school does not begin until after Labor Day. When they register for school they find their children are almost a full month behind!

Registration does not take place at neighborhood schools. Parents must register their children at one of two Parent Information Centers (located in Cape Coral at the High Tech North Center just north of the intersection of Santa Barbara Blvd and Pine Island Road and downtown Fort Myers at the corner of Jackson and Second Streets). The student assignment process for 2007 begins at the end of January and ends in mid-March. Students new to the system, those moving from one zone to another zone and those just wanting to change schools will have to make application in person at one of the two Parent Information Centers.

There are specific documents a parent needs to have prior to registration including:

*An original birth certificate

*Health examination within 12 months

*Social Security card (if available)

*Florida Certificate of Immunization (if coming from out of state this can be obtained at the Lee County Health Department-call for details.)

*Proof of residence

*Proof of custody (if student does not live with both natural parents)

*Name and address of last school attended

*Copy of IEP (Special education students)
